The prompt and generous action of the Hongkong Goverment in contributing consignments of rice and foodstuffs for the relief of destitute sufferers is to be gratefully recorded,

and has evoked gemine feelings of gratitude and appreciation

among the local Chinese community.

The rise is consigned to me, and I have arranged, through

the Chinese officials, for its proper distribution by the

Typhoon Relief Committee, a body consisting of Chinese official and prominent mercantile representatives, with

foreign supervision over the actual delivery of the rice, as required by the Committee, from the Customs Examination Shed,

where it is stored for the present.

In response to my suggestion as to the advisability of

having a warship in port, H.M.8. "Magnolia" has been sent up

here, and arrived on the 7th instant. Though her principal

object will be to protect the stranded British ships "Shantung"

and "Tingshing", her wireless installation will be extremely

useful in maintaining uninterrupted telegraphic communication

with Hongkong.

As news comes in from the surrounding districts, the

magnitude of the disaster becomes more apparent. The loss

of life has been very great. Goa Bua (9) 2} }, Ching Hai (4), Nam Io (4), Teng Ling (##), and other

places in the delta and in the vicinity of the sea, suffered

terribly. Over 10,000 people are said to have perished in

Goa Bua, and some 7,000 in Nam Ie. Fight members of the Magistrate's family were amongst the thousands of drowned at

Ühinghai.

An alarmist rumour was ourrent in the city yesterday to

the effect that a band of 2,000 brigands was on its way to

Bwatow to loot the place. Nobody seemed to know whence they

were coming, and, as they have not yet put in an

appearance,

there
